11 Killed, 25 Missing After Extra-Tropical Cyclone Hits Brazil

Date:

A devastating extra-tropical cyclone struck Brazil’s southern state of Rio Grande do Sul on Friday, resulting in the loss of at least 11 lives, according to state authorities. The region was battered by intense rainfall, leading to severe flooding and leaving 25 individuals missing, prompting helicopter searches in affected neighborhoods. The town of Caraa, which is home to over 8,000 residents, was particularly hard-hit by the cyclone’s impact.

Expressing deep concern for the situation in Caraa, Governor Eduardo Leite of Rio Grande do Sul emphasized the need for organized efforts to swiftly assess the extent of the damage and identify those requiring assistance. During his visit to the area, he underscored the importance of promptly mapping the areas most affected by the disaster.

As of Friday night, the municipality of Maquine, located on the eastern coast, had experienced approximately one foot of rainfall, as reported by authorities. In response to the calamity, many affected residents have sought refuge in outdoor sports facilities, while authorities have issued landslide warnings in multiple areas.

Over the past two days, authorities have conducted around 2,400 rescues, with the primary focus on safeguarding and saving lives. Governor Leite emphasized that the rescue efforts are aimed at assisting stranded individuals, locating missing persons, and providing support to affected families.

Tragically, deadly flooding has been a recurrent occurrence in Brazil, causing widespread devastation for decades.
