Police have reported that eleven people have lost their lives following a gas leak incident in the Giaspura area of Punjab district on Sunday. The police also confirmed that four other people who fell ill due to the gas leak are currently receiving medical attention in a nearby hospital. The cause and type of gas involved in the incident are yet to be determined, and the area has been sealed off with a fire brigade and ambulance deployed to the scene.
According to Ludhiana Police Commissioner Mandeep Singh Sidhu, preliminary investigations indicate that someone may have released a poisonous chemical into a manhole, causing the deaths. He added that the police would register a case and hold the culprits responsible for the incident. A 50-member team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has also arrived at the site to aid in the investigation.
Among the casualties, five females and six males have been identified, including two boys aged 10 and 13. The NDRF is yet to determine the type of gas involved in the incident. The immediate priority of the authorities is to evacuate people from the area, as it is a densely populated area. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed his condolences for the incident on Twitter, stating that all possible help is being provided to the affected individuals and families.
