The Czech Police Department received reports about sound of gunshots within the output clinic at the University Hospital in Ostrava on Tuesday at around 7:19am. The officers arrived at the scene a few moments later, at about 7:24am and discovered four dead individuals and two severely injured individuals.
Jiri Havarlant, the director of the hospital, confirmed that five victims died on the spot while one individual died later on in surgery, as per a report by Reuters. The victims include 2 adult females and 4 adult males.
The police initiated a search post the suspect seemed to have escaped from the crime scene. However, he was later discovered dead inside his vehicle just a few minutes post the incident, apparently from a gunshot wound on his head.
Tomas Kuzel, the regional police chief, identified the culprit as a man somewhere in his 40s who had utilized an unauthorised Czech-manufactured gun for the attack. As per Kuzel, the police believe that the gunman acted alone as well as held a criminal record.
