Centre Announces ₹200 Price Reduction for LPG Gas Cylinders Across All Consumers

Date:

The Union cabinet meeting held on Tuesday witnessed a significant development as the Centre announced a reduction of ₹200 per cylinder in cooking gas prices for all domestic consumers. The cabinet’s approval of an additional subsidy within the Ujjwala scheme means that the subsidy per cylinder for Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries will now stand at ₹400.

The current cost of a 14.2-kg LPG cylinder in New Delhi, amounting to ₹1,103, will be revised to ₹903 starting Wednesday. Similarly, Ujjwala beneficiaries will experience a reduction to ₹703 per cylinder, accounting for the ongoing ₹200 subsidy per cylinder.

Union Minister Anurag Thakur attributed this move to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, characterizing it as a Raksha Bandhan and Onam gift to the women of the nation. Thakur highlighted the growth in LPG connections, indicating that since coming into power in 2014, domestic LPG connections have surged from 14.5 crore to 33 crore, with 9.6 crore distributed under the Ujjwala scheme.

BJP president JP Nadda expressed heartfelt gratitude for the cabinet’s decision, acknowledging the significant price cut in cooking gas. Nadda emphasized that Ujjwala beneficiaries will now access LPG at ₹700, while other consumers will benefit from a price of ₹900 per cylinder.

Free gas connection for 75 lakh women

During the cabinet briefing, Thakur disclosed that on the auspicious occasions of Raksha Bandhan and Onam, the government intends to provide free gas connections to 75 lakh women through the Ujjwala scheme.

This initiative will encompass the provision of a gas burner, the inaugural cooking gas cylinder, and the accompanying pipe, further expanding the reach of the Ujjwala scheme to encompass a total of 10.35 crore beneficiaries upon the inclusion of these 75 lakh women.
