How Fresh Air Can Dramatically Improve Your Health

Whenever we’re feeling unwell, we’re always told to get some fresh air. However, we never actively think about what it is that fresh air does to so swiftly affect our moods, as well as our health in the long run. Sadly, most of us spend the majority of our time stuck in our workplaces or running chores at home. The average individual is only exposed to fresh air when commuting to and from different locations, and even then it’s usually just the distance from the indoors to where a vehicle is parked.

Here’s why exposure to fresh air is important and how it can dramatically improve your health.

While fresh air does not necessarily boost your immunity, polluted air suppresses your immune system and slowly wreaks havoc on it as you age. When you begin spending more time in the great outdoors, where there’s abundant fresh air to breathe, you notice how your body is less likely to get sick or affected by common diseases such as the flu. This also applies to more serious diseases and complications, ranging from heart diseases to the likelihood of developing cancerous cells. This is simply because when we breathe in polluted air, our bodies are not supplied with the needed oxygen to keep our bodily functions in check and our cells rejuvenated.

Respiratory Health

While not every individual may immediately notice the effects of breathing fresh air in the lungs and respiratory health, anyone who suffers asthma will definitely notice a dramatic improvement over a short period of time. The manufacturers from explain how many of their clients have reported dramatic improvement in their respiratory health after installing air filters in their HVAC systems. This is because filters and purifiers reduce dander, pollutants, as well as allergens in the air, which makes breathing feel much less laborious to individuals with asthma and respiratory diseases.

There’s a reason why people opt for a walk to calm them down, and that’s because the breathing fresh air makes us feel instantly relaxed and refreshed. It’s not so much a placebo effect as much as it is chemical; the influx of more oxygen into our lungs encourages serotonin production, which is the feel-good chemical that lightens our mood and makes us feel composed as well as happy. Breathing fresh air has a similar effect on our moods to the effects of exercising, which is why it’s advised to take a jog in the outdoors every morning – both combined can dramatically elevate your mood.

Individuals who live in areas where they have access to less polluted air feel much more energized throughout the day than those who live in polluted urban areas. When we breathe in more oxygen, which is much more abundantly found in fresh air, our lungs dilate more efficiently. This helps keep your body fueled with energy, which thus makes you feel more alert, more productive, and much less likely to procrastinate. If you have trouble waking up in the morning, try sleeping with the windows half-open, or take your coffee on the patio to quickly ease off your morning grogginess. If staying at home, in general, makes you feel sleepy, this is likely because the air inside your home is filled with allergens, so you may need to consider installing an air filter.

Because your body is supplied with more oxygen when you breathe in fresh air, every cell is supplied with enough nutrients and your blood pressure is kept in check. This helps prevent premature aging, which is generally caused by the breakdown of collagen in your skin. To keep your skin and body healthy and rejuvenated, you’ll want to increase your exposure to fresh air. If you’re stuck in an office all day, try to sit next to a window, or excuse yourself to get some fresh air during your breaks instead of lurking by the water cooler.

Mental Health

Individuals who suffer mental health issues, such as depression, may greatly benefit from breathing in fresh air. As previously mentioned, fresh air can increase the production of serotonin. But that’s not all; inhaling fewer pollutants may increase the efficiency of SSRI medications, which commonly have notorious side effects that make patients feel drowsy or sleepy. Because exposure to fresh air makes individuals more alert and betters their moods, this can counter the side effects of many SSRI drugs.

Breathing in fresh air can ameliorate countless aspects of your life, which all start with your health. Individuals who breathe in the fresh air are more likely to have stable moods. On the other hand, fresh air also affects immunity and an individual’s ability to naturally fight off diseases. Being around less pollution may also affect appearance, seeing as pollutants speed up aging.
