Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has accused agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) of targeting their fiercest political opponents by going to extraordinary lengths such as lying to the courts in affidavits, torturing suspects to extract falsified confessions, and making thuggish threats. He made these comments a day after being summoned by the CBI in the liquor policy case.
He also launched a blistering attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP, claiming that there was not a shred of proof of any wrongdoing against any AAP leader.
Despite months of investigation and scores of arrests, the agencies have not found a single penny of ill-gotten wealth that they claim was amassed from the so-called liquor scam, according to Kejriwal. He also refuted the allegation that crores in kickbacks were paid for favours in the policy and funnelled into his party’s election campaign in Goa last year, saying that all their payments were made with cheques. Kejriwal announced that he will sue the agencies for perjury and falsifying evidence.
The CBI is probing allegations that the liquor policy implemented by the Delhi government last year gave undue advantages to private retailers and that the highest levels of Kejriwal’s government were involved in the swindle.
Manish Sisodia’s arrest in February was the highest-profile arrest in the case so far. Kejriwal has said that he will appear for questioning as requested by the CBI. The summons to Kejriwal comes as his 10-year-old party, recently upgraded to the status of a national outfit, tries to position itself as one of the main alternatives to PM Modi’s BJP.
Kejriwal also defended the liquor policy, claiming that it was a game-changing and transparent policy that had resulted in a 50 per cent increase in revenue when introduced in Punjab, which they call corrupt.
