The tragic discovery of eight bodies near the Canada-US border has shocked and saddened the world. The victims, believed to be from an Indian and Romanian family, were attempting to cross the St. Lawrence River into the United States near Akwesasne.
The bodies of six adults and two children, one of whom had a Canadian passport, were found in a marsh on the riverbank. The exact cause of their deaths is still under investigation, but it is suspected that harsh weather conditions played a role.
It is not the first time that a search operation for missing people was conducted who have tried to cross the border. Authorities frequently rescue people attempting to enter the US or Canada over the river and its tributaries. In fact, almost exactly a year ago, a group of six Indian nationals were rescued after their boat hit a shallow bank and got stuck.
Unfortunately, human smuggling has been on the rise at the US-Canada border. Police have reported an uptick in incidents of human smuggling into the US, with 48 incidents reported so far this year. U.S. Customs and Border Patrol has also reported an increase in people trying to cross from Canada into the US, with more than 64,000 people coming through Quebec or Ontario into New York in 2022 alone.
The recent deaths have nothing to do with the closure of the Roxham Road illegal border crossing, but they highlight the risks and dangers associated with illegal migration. It is essential for governments and policymakers to address the root causes of illegal migration and create safe and legal channels for people to seek asylum or immigrate to other countries.
As we mourn the loss of these eight individuals, we must also come together to find meaningful solutions to prevent such tragedies from happening again. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that all people, regardless of their background or circumstances, are treated with dignity and respect and have the opportunity to live a safe and prosperous life.
