India’s Daily Covid Infections Surpass 6,000, Active Cases Exceed 28,000 Mark: India’s Covid cases have once again surged, with 6,050 new infections reported in the last 24 hours, according to the latest data from the Union Health Ministry on Friday. This comes just a day after the country recorded 5,300 cases.

India logs over 6,000 Covid infections in 24 hrs, active cases cross 28,000 mark

The rise has pushed the country’s active Covid-19 caseload to 28,303, an increase of nearly 2,716 cases. In response to this increase, Union Health Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya will be holding a review meeting with the health ministers of all states and Union Territories.

Scientists have suggested that the XBB.1.16 Covid-19 variant is responsible for the current surge in cases. However, due to the hybrid immunity developed by people in India, which is a combination of vaccination and natural infection, hospitalizations are not expected to increase significantly. The government has advised people to wear masks in crowded places and complete their vaccination doses, if not already done.

According to the latest bulletin by INSACOG, the recombinant coronavirus variant XBB.1.16 has been found in different parts of the country and accounts for 38.2% of the infections reported to date. The Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Shelly Oberoi, has assured the public that MCD hospitals are fully equipped to handle any Covid-related situation, with reserved beds and oxygen cylinders available, and the ability to provide RT-PCR and antigen tests.

In Sikkim, the state government has issued an advisory asking people to wear face masks in public places due to the surge in Covid-19 cases in the state and the country as a whole. The government continues to issue guidelines to states and union territories and has held regular reviews with them, including one led by Prime Minister Modi.
