Hot on the heels of its recent expansion, Mexican restaurant Kalaveras is heating things up again with the announcement of 13 new locations around the United States. Kalaveras has grown rapidly since it opened its first restaurant in San Diego in 2017, with new locations opening every few months and rave reviews from customers and critics alike. The chain’s popularity may be thanks to its unique approach to healthy, authentic Mexican food that has revitalized the American take on Mexican cuisine.
The History of Kalaveras
In 2007, Kalaveras opened their first location in Rio Grande City, Texas. The restaurant quickly became a favorite of many locals and tourists due to their authentic flavors and friendly service. In 2012, they had to close their doors because of Hurricane Dolly’s flooding. Thankfully, a year later they were able to reopen in an area that would be safe from any future natural disasters.
In 2017, Kalavera’s founder Ramon Lopez decided it was time for his restaurant chain to expand beyond just one state so he created his goal of opening 10 new locations in 10 different states by 2020. He has already made good on his promise by opening up six new locations across the country in just one year!
The Expansion
Mexican food has become a more and more popular cuisine in America, and Kalavera’s has been at the forefront of this movement. The restaurant originally opened in East Los Angeles in 1983, but recently it’s been branching out to new locations all over California. The newest thirteen restaurants will be opening up over the next two years, including one in San Diego that will open just before Christmas this year. This expansion means there will soon be a location for every major city in California and nearby states like Nevada and Arizona, making it easier for people to find an affordable meal on their lunch break.
The New Locations
Kalaveras Mexican restaurant is expanding to 13 more locations. The company, which began in Houston, TX in 1996, now has a total of 25 restaurants and plans to grow even more.
We started our first location 26 years ago and it’s been an amazing journey so far, says Kalaveras co-founder Eduardo Carrillo. It’s exciting to see how much we’ve grown over time.
The new expansion will add five locations in Texas, three in Florida, two each in Arizona and Tennessee, one each in Nevada and Georgia, as well as opening up their first international location – opening a restaurant in Mexico City this year.

The Menu
For those who are unfamiliar with Mexican cuisine, Kalaveras offers a variety of dishes that are sure to please.
