Netflix is elevating its gaming initiative to new heights, with intentions to conduct trial runs of games on specific televisions and computers. Mike Verdu, the Vice President of Games at the company, outlined these advancements in a blog post published on Monday.
In an effort to broaden the accessibility of games, Netflix is embarking on a limited beta test aimed at a select group of members in Canada and the United Kingdom. The trial will make its debut on certain televisions starting from Monday, and in the upcoming weeks, it will extend its reach to PCs and Macs via Netflix.com, accessible through compatible web browsers.
Having initially ventured into the gaming realm by introducing games for mobile devices in November 2021, Netflix has been diligently working to diversify its gaming offerings. Up until now, the platform’s games have been exclusively available on Apple’s iOS and Alphabet’s Android platforms.
The preliminary testing phase will feature titles such as “Oxenfree” from Night School Studio, a game development entity under Netflix, and “Molehew’s Mining Adventure,” an arcade-style gem-mining game.
For television users, the games can be played using their smartphones, while PC and Mac users can enjoy the gaming experience on Netflix.com utilizing a keyboard and mouse.
Mike Verdu elucidated, “By extending game availability across various devices, our objective is to enrich the gaming journey for our global members.”
Netflix has disclosed that the television-based games will be functional on devices from initial partners, including Amazon Fire TV Streaming Media Players, Chromecast with Google TV, Roku devices, and other compatible platforms.
Back in March, the company had announced plans to introduce an additional 40 games later in the year, in addition to the 70 games currently in development through partnerships. This expansion is accompanied by the 16 games already in progress at Netflix’s in-house game studios.
Recently, Netflix unveiled the Netflix Game Controller app on the Apple App Store, designed for iPhones and iPads. Operating as a virtual gamepad, the Netflix Game Controller app facilitates gameplay of Netflix games on televisions. Designed to be compatible with devices running iOS 15 or iPadOS 15 and later versions, the app pairs seamlessly with your TV, enabling a gaming experience through your mobile device.
