OpenAI Empowers ChatGPT with Five Distinct Voices

Date:

OpenAI, the artificial intelligence startup, has introduced a remarkable feature to its ChatGPT app, adding a touch of human interaction. Now, within the next couple of weeks, users can select from five different personas with names like “Juniper,” “Breeze,” and “Ember” to give their chatbot a unique voice. The chatbot, known as ChatGPT, will then respond in that chosen voice, making conversations feel more human.

This feature is available to subscribers of OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus service, priced at $20 per month, as well as enterprise users. OpenAI initially released the ChatGPT app in May, offering voice-to-text functionality, enabling users to talk to the chatbot. Now, with the introduction of audio responses, OpenAI is aiming to create a more conversational experience, putting it in direct competition with personal assistant services like Google’s Assistant, Apple’s Siri, or Amazon’s Alexa.

Imagine being able to ask the chatbot about the history of Disneyland while on your way to the theme park, or requesting a cocktail recipe while rummaging through your kitchen. In a test run, the chatbot eloquently narrated a story about a starfish and a rutabaga. However, it does have its limits; it won’t sing, even though it can generate song lyrics.

The voices of ChatGPT are impressively human-like, though they may reveal a subtle robotic undertone upon close listening. OpenAI collaborated with voice actors to develop the text-to-speech AI model behind this feature.

In the near future, paid and enterprise users will also have access to a feature tied to GPT-4, one of the AI models powering ChatGPT. This feature allows users to submit a picture along with a related question. For example, you could upload a picture of pink sunglasses and ask the chatbot to suggest an outfit to complement them, or submit a math problem picture and request help solving it. This enhancement, previously announced by OpenAI, will be accessible through the ChatGPT app and website.

OpenAI continues to push the boundaries of AI-powered interactions, making technology feel more human and accessible in our daily lives.
