India is all set to embark on another ODI one-day international World Cup. Although most of the 15-member squad has been selected, a few selections have posed few questions.
As the Indian cricket team gears to go and play one of the most exciting and crucial cricketing tournament, there are many questions posed by followers and fans. The most Important questions that India’s World Cup squad is facing: whether the Indian team buckle, particularly under the English weather? And are the controversies drawn from the performance or are they just inspired choices? But prior to that, there is another question: in what way does this World Cup squad from India compare with those before?
Let’s begin with analyzing the last question first – how does this squad compare to the last one – batting has always been a strong suit of India – since 1999, the top order has comprised batsmen with a penchant for scoring runs and hitting boundaries. Though the previous batsmen are all worthy, Kohli’s average of 59.7 makes him a terror for the opposing team – he can be explosive and can single-handedly score runs for convincing victories. With a rating of 890, he is inching closer to the rank of his predecessor Sachin Tendulkar, who was ranked No. 1 with a rating of 820 during World Cup 1999.
In regards to the bowling side, on ratings and rankings, this squad is better than the previous ones. The ranking of the top four Indian bowlers on average is 8, and their mean rating is 691 points both the highest among the six squads. Jasprit Bumrah, the pace bowler is ranked one, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal, the spinners are ranked 7 and 8, respectively, and 15th rank is given to Bhuvneshwar Kumar. In terms of bowling, this is the best World Cup squad over the last two decades.
Now let’s analyze the second question – controversies, the favorite child of the Indian cricket team. The fact is any team, selected to play in the World Cup will face criticism and questions. This one is no different. However, one thing many people tend to forget, selectors want a win, and they spend months analyzing the performance of each player to know their readiness to play for the World Cup. The team is selected keeping form and inputs from coaches before the final decisions are taken. Hence, controversies are drawn because of every reason possible, as cricket is India’s favorite game and everybody has an opinion.
In the end, let’s explore the first question which connects the players’ performance with the weather. Though playing on home ground is a bonus for each sportsperson, including cricketers, it cannot affect the form and performance. An in-form player will not be affected by the weather or for that matter controversies, and hence, the weather or other conditions will not affect the Indian’s teams performance.
