Air India Plane Crash: Death Toll Reaches 270, Families Await Bodies

Date:

On Saturday, June 14, 2025, the death toll from the tragic Air India jet disaster increased to 270, and relatives are growing increasingly irate over the delays in transferring the bodies of those who perished in the Ahmedabad tragedy.

The world’s biggest aviation catastrophe in a decade occurred Thursday when a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner carrying 242 passengers headed for Britain’s Gatwick Airport started to lose height seconds after takeoff and exploded in a flame as it struck buildings below.

Dhaval Gameti, head of the Junior Doctors Association at B.J. Medical College, informed reporters that at least 270 dead had been found at the scene of the jet crash.

The plane crashed into the medical college’s dorm as it came down, killing several of the 242 passengers and crew members on board, leaving only one alive. Air India has been impacted by the crisis; since the Tata Group acquired the airline from the Indian government in 2022, it has been fighting for years to improve its fleet and restore its reputation. While the organization wants to know what happened, Tata’s chairman stated on Friday that “we don’t know right now.”

According to Reuters, Air India and the Indian government were investigating a number of aspects of the incident, including problems with the plane’s engine thrust, flaps, and the reason the landing gear stayed open during takeoff and descent.

Rafiq Abdul Hafiz Memon, who lost four family members in the event, claimed he was “very hassled” and was not receiving any response from the authorities.

“We don’t understand anything since we lost our kids. Please assist us in gathering data about our kids. Inform us when their bodies will be released,” Memon said.

Another father expressed his frustration at not being allowed to retrieve his son Harshad Patel’s remains, claiming that police had informed him that DNA profiling would take 72 hours. “The authorities are trying to help but our patience is running out,” he stated.

Authorities are utilizing tooth samples to verify identities because the majority of the crash victims were severely burned.

The dental records of 135 burned victims can be compared to the individuals’ previous dental charts, radiographs, or other documents, forensic dentist Jaishankar Pillai told reporters on Friday.
