A massive earthquake of 5.7 magnitude slammed northern Bangladesh on Friday morning, killing at least six people and wounding others, according to local media sources. Tremors were widely felt in West Bengal and other northeastern states, sending many rushing outdoors.
The epicenter of the earthquake was situated in the Ghorashal neighborhood of the Narsingdi district, some 25 kilometers from the capital Dhaka, and it struck at 10.38 am (local time). A depth of 10 km was reported by the US Geological Survey (USGS).
Dhaka-based DBC Television later reported six deaths in the city alone, including three individuals murdered as parts of a building’s wall and roof collapsed and three pedestrians crushed by falling railings. Initial police reports confirmed at least three deaths.
In panic-driven occurrences throughout Dhaka, where buildings trembled violently during the earthquake, dozens more people were hurt. Fearing aftershocks, residents flocked out of homes, workplaces, and high-rises to congregate in public areas.
According to the USGS, the middle region of Bangladesh, where Friday’s earthquake occurred, is usually less active than the northern and southeast, which are known to be earthquake-prone due to the collision of the India and Eurasia tectonic plates.
Kolkata is shaken by powerful tremors.
Residents of Guwahati, Assam, Kolkata, and portions of West Bengal fled into the streets as a precaution due to tremors.
Many people in Kolkata described the intensity on social media. Supratim Maitra commented on X, “Small quake but big panic,” noting that even a small tremor sent shockwaves through neighborhoods.
