This week, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will travel to India to discuss the wider border dispute between the two nations with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.
The Chinese leader’s visit coincides with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first trip to China since 2018 for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Tianjin, where he will be joined by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, among others.
The SCO ministerial meetings earlier this year in June were also attended by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
Along with meeting Jinping in Beijing, Jaishankar gave him an update on current events in India-China relations and emphasized the significance of ongoing leadership direction in furthering bilateral relations.
Following the Chinese invasion of Ladakh in May 2020, which ultimately resulted in the Galwan conflict that claimed the lives of 20 Indian soldiers and several Chinese forces, relations between the two nations progressively stabilized.
On October 23, 2024, PM Modi and Jinping met on the fringes of the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, which marked the resurgence of bilateral ties between the two Asian powers after strained relations for more than four years.
Therefore, India and China had decided to resume patrols in the Depsang region of Eastern Ladakh just prior to the conference.
The decision to fully disengage and resolve the concerns that occurred in the border regions between China and India in 2020 was warmly received by both leaders. PM Modi has emphasized how crucial it is to resolve disagreements and conflicts amicably and to prevent them from upsetting the peace.
Both nations agreed in June to resume direct flights, facilitate the pilgrimage Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, take steps to ease visa requirements, and exchange information on transnational rivers. The Indian Embassy in China announced last month that India will start granting Chinese nationals tourist visas again.
