Delhi Struggles with Pollution: Schools Shift Online as New Restrictions Begin

Date:

Delhi’s Most Polluted Areas This Morning: Jahangirpuri, Bawana, Wazirpur, Rohini, and Punjabi Bagh

New Delhi: For the third day in a row, Delhi’s air quality has been classified as “severe,” and the city is still shrouded in haze. With an AQI of 498 at 7 am, Delhi is the second most polluted city in the world, behind Lahore, Pakistan, with an AQI of 770. The Swiss company IQAir uses Particulate Matter 2.5 (PM2.5) statistics to rank major cities.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board’s Sameer App, the top five polluted neighborhoods in Delhi this morning are Jahangirpuri (AQI 458), Bawana (455), Wazirpur (455), Rohini (452), and Punjabi Bagh (443).

Safdurjung in Delhi recorded 400m visibility, while Palam reported 500m.

Smog-induced low visibility has impacted train and aviation operations throughout India. There are issues with a number of IndiGo flights to and from Amritsar. Numerous SpiceJet flights to and from Darbanga and Delhi are experiencing delays.

Many trains are more than two hours behind schedule. Additionally, around 25 trains are running late as they arrive at the New Delhi railway station.

Chief Minister Atishi declared in a post on X that all Delhi elementary schools had gone online, with no end in sight. She stated that the primary school students’ online courses will go on “until further directions”.

GRAP Stage 3 Enforced: Key Restrictions to Combat Delhi’s Pollution Crisis

Stage 3 of the Graded Action Response Plan (GRAP) was implemented by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on Thursday. The following limitations and actions have been put in place under GRAP 3:

  • A prohibition on unnecessary building and destruction projects.
  • BS-III gasoline and BS-IV diesel four-wheelers are prohibited from operating in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), including Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, and Noida.
  • Diesel generator sets should only be used in an emergency. It is prohibited to conduct industrial activities using fuels that are not on the standard list of allowed ones.
  • Increased use of water sprinkling and automated road sweeping to reduce dust.
Expanding the availability of public transportation and encouraging off-peak usage by offering discounted fares.
  • Significant gas-cutting and welding activities. However, little welding is allowed for MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) projects.
  • Tasks include painting, varnishing, and polishing. Cement, plaster, and other coatings, excluding small-scale indoor maintenance and repairs. Except small indoor repairs and maintenance, cutting, grinding, and fixing tiles, stones, and other flooring materials. Waterproofing job (chemical waterproofing excluded).
  • Transportation of construction-related vehicles over dirt roads. Even healthy people can be negatively impacted by prolonged exposure to “severe” AQI, and those who already have illnesses may suffer significant consequences. Since air pollution can lead to health concerns ranging from respiratory to cardiovascular, doctors have advised patients to spend as much time indoors as possible.

The health experts advise wearing masks, particularly in severely polluted areas, and minimizing outdoor activity during peak pollution periods, which are usually in the early morning and evening.
