The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner announced late Saturday that the Eaton fire had claimed the lives of eleven persons. It puts the fire close to Pasadena on the list of the deadliest in California history.
The Palisades fire has also reported five deaths, increasing the total number of fatalities from the fires sweeping through Los Angeles to 16. Authorities have cautioned that the death toll is probably going to increase.
Here are the other deadliest fires ever in the state, according to Cal Fire:
2018 Camp Fire: It destroyed 18,000 buildings and claimed 85 lives in Butte County.
Griffith Park fire, 1933: The 1933 Griffith Park fire claimed the lives of 29 firefighters while only burning 47 acres. The men battling the fire were mainly untrained, according to newspapers at the time.
Tunnel fire, 1991: It burned through 1,600 acres in the Oakland hills, damaged 2,900 buildings, and claimed 25 lives.
Tubbs fire, 2017: In Napa and Sonoma counties, the fire damaged 5,600 buildings, destroyed 36,000 acres, and claimed 22 lives.
Rattlesnake fire, 1953: 15 persons were murdered in the 1953 Rattlesnake fire in Glenn County, Northern California.
Cedar fire, 2003: Fifteen people were killed in the San Diego fire.
North Complex fire, 2020: Butte, Plumas, and Yuba counties in Northern California were affected by the fire, which claimed 15 lives.
Hauser Creek fire, 1943: 11 persons were killed in the San Diego region by the Hauser Creek fire in 1943.
Inaja fire, 1956: 11 persons were killed in the 1956 Inaja fire in San Diego County’s Cleveland National Forest.
