In a significant step toward enhanced global cooperation, the European Union and India officially launched a Security and Defence Partnership on January 27, 2026, during the 16th EU-India Summit in New Delhi. This initiative aims to deepen collaboration on critical strategic issues, including defence industry advancements and maritime security, as highlighted by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in her announcement.
The partnership was formalized following high-level discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, EU Commission President von der Leyen, and European Council President António Costa. It builds on the longstanding EU-India strategic relationship established in 2004, marking a shift from dialogue to practical cooperation in areas such as counter-terrorism, cybersecurity, and regional stability. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and EU High Representative Kaja Kallas played key roles in the agreement, emphasizing shared commitments to a rules-based international order.
Von der Leyen described the move as a platform for “stronger cooperation on the strategic issues that matter most,” underscoring the trust between the world’s two largest democracies. The partnership also explores opportunities for India’s involvement in European defence initiatives, amid efforts to reduce dependencies and bolster resilience in a volatile geopolitical landscape.
This development coincides with the conclusion of negotiations on a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the EU and India, expected to boost bilateral trade and investment while addressing climate goals with €500 million in EU support for India’s sustainable transformation. Experts view the agreements as a response to rising global tensions, positioning the EU and India as pivotal partners in promoting peace and economic openness.
As both sides navigate challenges like supply chain disruptions and security threats in the Indo-Pacific, this partnership signals a commitment to long-term, credible collaboration that extends beyond short-term politics.
