The Islamist organisation Hezbollah, which has its headquarters in Beirut, stated that its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, had perished in an Israeli airstrike. Other important commanders were also slain in the attack, which Israel dubbed “Operation New Order”. Nasrallah had a pivotal role in the political and military ascent of Hezbollah, serving as its leader for more than thirty years. Israel believes that his passing will destabilise the Hezbollah leadership. As tensions between the factions rise in the wake of Hamas’ October 2023 attack on Israel, Iran’s Supreme Leader urged for support for Hezbollah while highlighting resistance against Israel.
