Humans cause 95% of wildfires in California, Cal Fire says

Date:

As investigators attempt to identify the cause of the wildfires presently burning throughout Los Angeles, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire, stated that 95% of California’s wildfires are started by humans.

“But that’s not all arson. It can be accidental,” David Acuña, a battalion chief with CAL Fire, said.

According to the National Interagency Fire Center, human-caused fires include arson, fires that spread out of control, like campfires, fires started accidentally, like by a cigarette butt that has been discarded, and fires brought on by the production, transmission, and distribution of electricity, as well as fires caused by the use of equipment and vehicles.

“So, we need the public’s help in order to make sure we do not have any additional sparks,” Acuña said. “No mowing where you could strike a rock, no dragging chains with the vehicle. Make sure your vehicle is in good repair, so it doesn’t kick out a hot piece of catalytic converter at 2000 degrees, or even just simply having a campfire. Don’t do any of that right now in this very, very high wind so that we can avoid another fire.”
