India Sends Massive 442-Tonne Food Relief to Myanmar Post Earthquake

Date:

April 5, Yangon, Myanmar (Storify News): As part of its continued humanitarian response to the tragic earthquake that devastated Myanmar last month, India sent 442 tonnes of food aid to the country on Friday as a show of solidarity.

The shipment, which included grains, cooking oil, noodles, and cookies, was delivered to Yangon Chief Minister U Soe Thein and his staff at Thilawa Port by Ambassador Abhay Thakur onboard the Indian Navy’s landing ship tank INS Gharial.

“Meeting needs of affected people. A large 442 T consignment of food aid (rice, cooking oil, noodles & biscuits) carried by the Indian Navy landing ship tank INS Gharial arrived today at Thilawa Port & was handed over by Ambassador Abhay Thakur to CM Yangon U Soe Thein & team.” was the post made on X (previously Twitter) by the Indian Embassy’s official page in Myanmar.

The assistance is a component of Operation Brahma, India’s all-encompassing relief effort that was started in response to the March 28 7.7-magnitude earthquake that devastated Myanmar and killed hundreds of people. The nation is still dealing with the fallout, and India has taken the lead in aiding rescue, relief, and recovery efforts by responding quickly as the first responder.

On Friday, while attending the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, Thailand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Senior General Min Aung Hlaing of Myanmar. PM Modi stated during the meeting that India is committed to the cause and is prepared to offer more material support if necessary. According to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, he also emphasized the necessity of holding genuine elections as soon as possible to restore democracy.

The most recent shipment is the 625 metric tonnes of humanitarian aid supplies that India has supplied so far as part of Operation Brahma. Equipped for rescue operations, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed on the ground, consisting of 80 personnel and four specially trained dogs. The Indian Army has also established a field hospital to offer the wounded and displaced vital medical attention.
