Japanese Govt plans to launch a ‘dating app’, ‘Tokyo Futari Story’, to boost declining national birth rates

Date:

Japan’s government is taking a novel approach to combat its shrinking birthrate. This summer, they plan to launch “Tokyo Futari Story,” a unique dating app designed to connect singles seeking marriage.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s administration is actively pursuing policies to address the demographic crisis. These include financial aid for families, improved childcare access, and extended parental leave. Birth rates hit a record low in 2023, prompting the government to go beyond traditional methods like matchmaking events.

Finding Love with “Tokyo Futari Story”

Unlike most dating apps, “Tokyo Futari Story” requires users to be serious about commitment. To join, participants must sign a document expressing their desire to marry and provide proof of single status. Additionally, they’ll need to submit a tax document for income verification.

A Tokyo government official overseeing the app explains, “Many people who want marriage aren’t actively seeking partners through events or apps. We hope this gently nudges them in that direction.”

The app underwent a free trial period since late 2023. Public reaction on social media has been mixed. Some netizens question the use of taxpayer funds for such an initiative. Others, however, see it as a positive step, emphasizing user safety and security concerns with existing dating platforms.

A Nation Facing Demographic Challenges

Japan’s aging population and low birthrate pose significant challenges. The death rate significantly outpaces the birth rate, with the number of dependents straining the social security system. In 2023, deaths outnumbered births by more than double, with preliminary data showing a 5.1% decline in births to 758,631. Meanwhile, deaths reached 1,590,503, reflecting a 209.7% increase compared to births.

“Tokyo Futari Story” represents a bold attempt by the Japanese government to reverse this concerning trend. Only time will tell if this app will be a successful tool in facilitating lasting relationships and increasing the birthrate.
