On Wednesday, the Maharashtra government declared that it and Elon Musk’s Starlink had signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) for the deployment of various satellite-based internet services. Maharashtra is now the first state to formally cooperate with the US-based satellite internet service provider.
Maharashtra will work with Starlink to implement the company’s satellite-based internet services for government buildings, rural areas, and vital public infrastructure, according to a PTI report. Additionally, they will be implemented in “remote and underserved regions and aspirational districts” such as Gadchiroli, Nandurbar, Washim, and Dharashiv, according to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Maharashtra CMO wrote in a post on X, “With @Starlink’s cutting-edge satellite technology, led by @elonmusk and @laurendreyer, Maharashtra takes a bold leap forward in bridging the last digital divide — powering education, healthcare, and connectivity in every corner of our State.”
“With this landmark decision, Maharashtra will lead India in satellite-enabled digital infrastructure. This is a giant leap towards future-ready Maharashtra” CM Fadnavis stated in a different post.
The Department of Telecom must grant Starlink regulatory and compliance clearances before the cooperation can proceed, according to the Maharashtra government.
