MakeMyTrip reports 250% spike in Turkey, Azerbaijan trip cancellations amid boycott calls

Date:

Indians’ support for Pakistan during the continuing tensions has prompted a rising internet campaign to boycott travel to Turkey and Azerbaijan. The campaign is beginning to show results.

Travel to these destinations is currently being canceled by a large number of Indian tourists. According to a statement from MakeMyTrip, India’s largest travel booking platform, bookings to Turkey and Azerbaijan have dropped sharply.

“Indian travellers have expressed strong sentiments over the past one week, with bookings for Azerbaijan and Turkey decreasing by 60%, while cancellations have surged by 250% during the same period,” MMT stated in a statement on May 14.

MMT stated that it stands “in solidarity with our nation and out of deep respect for our armed forces, we strongly support this sentiment and advise all against all non-essential travel to Azerbaijan and Turkey,” even though the platform is still able to book flights to these countries on its website. To deter travel to these two locations, we have already removed all of the promos and deals off our platform.

Days after urging travelers to stay away from Turkey and Azerbaijan because of their open support for Pakistan during the ongoing “Operation Sindoor,” Nishant Pitti, the founder and former chairman of EaseMyTrip, had earlier on May 14 urged people to choose “Made in India” products over Chinese alternatives.
