Maryland funeral home Mass shooting leaves 1 dead, 9 injured

Date:

According to county officials, a mass shooting at a funeral home in Baltimore County, Maryland, on Tuesday night left one person dead and nine others injured.

At approximately 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, officers responded to reports of gunfire on Loch Raven Boulevard, according to Baltimore County Police Chief Robert McCullough. According to Baltimore County Fire Chief Joe Dixon, the incident occurred in the neighborhood of Towson, close to Johnson Funeral Home.

An officer discovered a burning car on its side at the site. Although more information was not available, McCullough stated that it seems the vehicle was engaged in an accident that resulted in it colliding and catching fire.

After contacting the county fire department, ten people were found nearby, nine of whom were injured and one of whom had died from a gunshot wound. According to the police chief, bullets injured most of the victims.

Under unclear circumstances, the nine surviving victims were taken to nearby trauma facilities. Information about the victims’ injuries was not immediately available.

Although the department is still investigating the shooting’s circumstances, McCullough stated that the event was thought to be isolated and targeted.

“[It] appears that the individuals in this case somehow knew one another,” McCullough said. “This incident was intentional and targeted.”

As of Tuesday evening, no one has been taken into custody in relation to the incident.

“We will leave no stone unturned and we will dedicate every resource to this,” the chief promised. “We don’t generally see this type of thing in our communities in Baltimore County. This is an isolated incident.”

According to Dixon, responding Baltimore County firefighters were able to contain the vehicle fire and treat the patients on the spot prior to transportation.

“Proud of our responders,” the fire chief remarked, emphasizing the collaboration between the fire and police agencies.

Attending the news conference was County Executive Johnny Olszewski, the U.S. House Representative-elect for Maryland’s 2nd Congressional District, who expressed his sorrow at the fatal shooting.

“This is an incident that is shocking, particularly for those of us in Baltimore County. These types of incidents are unheard of here, so it really shocks the conscious,” he said.

He went on to say that the county is “fully committed” to making sure the fire and police departments have all the resources and support they need while the inquiry is ongoing.

Anonymous tips on the incident can be submitted to Metro Crime Stoppers of Maryland at 1-866-756-2587, with the possibility of receiving a reward of up to $2,000.
