India-US: Modi Meets US Tech Leaders to Boost Semiconductor Industry

Date:

The prime minister of India, Narendra Modi, has invited the leading US technology businesses to consider India as a hub for manufacturing and research. Following his participation in the annual Quad Up involving the US, Australia, and Japan, Modi met in New York with the CEOs of the top IT businesses.

Multinational firms seeking to change their sourcing strategy have made India the front-runner in the competition to replace China in their plans. Although the government has focused a lot of attention on chip manufacture in recent years, it still trails behind major global producers like China and Taiwan.

In his remarks on Monday, Prime Minister Modi spoke to sixteen CEOs, with a focus on those from Google, Adobe, IBM, Lenovo, and Nvidia, namely Sundar Pichai, Shantanu Narayen, Arvind Krishna, and Jensen Huang. “Co-create, co-create and co-manufacture this country to the world,” he emphasised, was something that businesses could do. The innovations that will significantly alter people’s lives and the economy were also discussed, according to the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

While in the US, Modi also attended an Indian American rally, referring to the attendees with pride as “the brand ambassadors for India.” Speaking to a crowd of up to 15,000 in “Big Apple,” he highlighted India’s role in pursuing “global development in peace, climate endeavours, innovations, and supply chains.”

Earlier, Modi met US President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the Quad summit, where many agreements were signed with the most important being pertaining to semiconductors. Blanket term ‘watershed arrangement’ defines the agreement built around setting up a chip production plant in India that will cater to national security, next-gen telecoms and green energy industries. In this, the US is collaborating with India for the first time to this extent, where the US and allied militaries receive chips from Indian Armed Forces.

Despite India’s historical struggles with its own semiconductor sector, this arrangement suggests that the US should diversify its supply of semiconductors to offset its reliance on China. The Indian Express described the facility’s goals in terms of high-power electronics, enhanced sensing, and communications—all of which are essential to modern warfare’s electronics.

It’s interesting that the two leaders talked about the claim made by Sikh separatist leaders in the USA and Canada that they are being endangered by forces supported by India, a claim that both countries have refuted.

In an attempt to generate imagery for the upcoming US elections, Indian Prime Minister Modi made his first trip to the US since taking office for the third time in June. Former US President Donald Trump, who has recently complimented nearly every relationship, also referred to Modi as a “normal man” and made hints about a meeting about which Indian diplomats have not disclosed any details. The encounter did not involve Trump Jr.

An analysis of the drafts revealed that the leaders of the Quad summit released a joint statement and action, which is the fourth action. The evaluation placed a strong focus on the protection of the individual nations in the Indo-Pacific area. Analysts’ criticism of China was the focus of their statement, which adopted a more assertive tone than prior years’ circumlocution. Stronger language is used in reference to provocations in the South China Sea. This is to be expected given that Quad members’ anxiety over China is rising, Kugelman added. The Quad partners also revealed plans for a cervical cancer project, a catastrophe logistics network, and maritime domain awareness.
