New Delhi: In an effort to mend the strained relations between the two countries following the 2020 Galwan conflict, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to China to attend the SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organization) regional conference in Tianjin city from August 31 to September 1.
In 2019, PM Modi made his most recent trip to China. However, in October 2024, he had met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan for the BRICS Summit.
The visit coincides with US President Donald Trump imposing strict tariffs and mounting pressure on India over its purchase of Russian oil. Given the current situation, it is anticipated that India’s readjusting its relations with China will serve as a counterbalance for the United States.
India’s involvement will also take place against the backdrop of the Pahalgam incident and Chinese assistance for Pakistan.
At a defense minister’s meeting held under the SCO in June, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh declined to sign a joint statement since it made no reference to the 26-person Pahalgam terror incident that occurred on April 22. Instead, it made reference to Balochistan, thereby accusing India of inciting instability in that region.
It seemed that Pakistan was the reason Pahalgam was left out of the declaration.
However, the US labeled The Resistance Front, a front for Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, a foreign terrorist organization for its role in the Pahalgam incident, prompting China to release a strong statement against terrorism the following month.
“China strongly condemns the terrorist assault that took place on April 22 and adamantly opposes terrorism in all its forms. Lin Jian, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, said, “China calls on regional countries to enhance counterterrorism cooperation and jointly maintain regional security and stability.”
Discussions with ten member nations are anticipated to address commerce, regional security, and terrorism this time at the SCO. There will be an attempt to bring stability and communication back to India-China relations.
On the fringes of the summit, PM Modi might meet one-on-one with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
PM Modi and Xi Jinping had met at the BRICS summit in Kazan in October 2024. Since then, attempts to ease border tensions between the two nations have accelerated, and the Kailash-Mansarovar yatra’s restart has significantly contributed to the normalization of relations.
SCO was founded in 2001 with the goal of fostering regional stability by collaboration. Belarus, China, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan are the ten nations that make up the bloc at the moment.
