The farewell season of Stranger Things is already making its mark on Netflix’s record books. Shortly after the Season 5 finale premiered on New Year’s Eve, the series qualified for Netflix’s all-time popularity rankings and wasted no time securing a place among the platform’s biggest English-language hits.
As per the latest available data, Stranger Things Season 5 has recorded over 105 million views, placing it ninth on Netflix’s all-time most-watched English-language TV seasons list. With viewership still accumulating, the season is expected to climb higher in the coming weeks.
Netflix calculates its historical rankings based on total views earned within the first 91 days of release. However, because Season 5 was released in multiple parts, its eligibility window extends longer than usual. The first volume, released on November 26, will continue adding views until late February. The second volume, which debuted on December 25, remains eligible through March, while the final episode released on December 31 will count views until the end of March.
This extended window gives Season 5 a significant advantage — and it’s already paying off.
The latest season has pushed Fool Me Once out of the top list and surpassed The Night Agent Season 1. It also delivered the largest opening ever for a Netflix English-language series, pulling in nearly 60 million views in its debut week alone.
With momentum still building, the possibility of Season 5 climbing further up the rankings looks increasingly realistic.
Can Season 5 break into the top three?
At present, Stranger Things Season 4 remains the franchise’s strongest performer, holding the third position with over 140 million views since its 2022 release. Only two titles currently rank higher — Wednesday Season 1 and Adolescence.
Season 5 still has several weeks of eligibility left, giving it a chance to narrow the gap.
During the final week of December, the show dominated Netflix’s weekly chart. Despite the finale being available for only five days in that tracking period, Season 5 managed to pull in more than 31 million views. Viewership could have been even higher had the finale not been released simultaneously in select movie theatres, where it reportedly earned over $25 million at the box office.
The “Stranger Things” effect continues
The success of Season 5 has also reignited interest in earlier seasons. For the sixth consecutive week, all previous seasons returned to Netflix’s global Top 10 list. Season 1 ranked third, followed by Season 2 and Season 3, while Season 4 also remained in the top rankings.
Elsewhere on Netflix’s charts that week were titles such as Run Away, Emily in Paris Season 5, and Ricky Gervais’s stand-up special Mortality. Still, none matched the cultural impact of Stranger Things.
For Netflix, the message is unmistakable. The final season of Stranger Things has not only delivered a powerful conclusion to one of its most iconic shows — it has also rewritten viewership records in the process.
