Indiana Republican Rep. Jim Banks is calling for an investigation into Brian Lozenski, a professor appointed to a Minnesota Department of Education working group on ethnic studies. Banks criticizes Lozenski for past comments advocating the “overthrow” of the U.S., claiming that he promotes a “radical and destructive worldview” that could influence educational standards in Minnesota.
Lozenski, an associate professor at Macalester College, has been recorded discussing his views on critical race theory, stating that the U.S. is “irreversibly racist” and suggesting it must be deconstructed. In a video from June 2022, he argued that critical race theory is fundamentally about insurgency against the U.S. government, asserting that one cannot support critical race theory while being pro-U.S.
Banks’ letter to Jennifer Hoppenstedt, interim inspector general of the Minnesota Department of Education, demands scrutiny of Lozenski’s past statements and their potential impact on the ethnic studies framework being developed by the working group, which is set to conclude its work by October 31.
