Heath Streak, former Zimbabwe Skipper Passes Away after Losing battle to Cancer

Date:

Heath Streak, the former cricket sensation from Zimbabwe, has passed away at the age of 49 in the early hours of Sunday, September 3. Earlier, there had been false reports of his demise, but this time, his wife Nadine confirmed the sad news in a heartfelt Facebook post. Streak had been battling cancer.

Nadine Streak shared on Facebook, “In the early hours of this morning, Sunday, September 3rd, 2023, the greatest love of my life and the father of my beautiful children, was carried to be with the angels from his home, where he wished to spend his last days surrounded by his family and closest loved ones. He was covered in love and peace and did not walk off the park alone. Our souls are joined for eternity, Streaky. Till I hold you again.”

Streak, one of Zimbabwe’s cricket legends, left an indelible mark on the sport. He played 65 Test matches and 189 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), even captaining the national team. His record of 216 Test wickets and 239 in ODIs stands as a testament to his exceptional talent. Moreover, he amassed 1,990 runs in Test matches and 2,943 in ODIs during his illustrious 12-year career, which spanned from 1993 to 2005.

As a captain, Streak also made significant contributions, holding the record for the most Test wins for Zimbabwe, with four victories out of 21 games. In ODIs, he led the team in 68 matches, clinching 18 wins. Following his retirement, he took up coaching for the national side.

Notably, there was a previous false alarm about Streak’s passing, with his former teammate Henry Olonga mistakenly sharing the news. Olonga later apologized after speaking with Streak. Unfortunately, this time, the news of Streak’s demise has been confirmed as true.

While Heath Streak’s cricketing career was marked by excitement and achievements, he faced a significant setback in 2021 when the International Cricket Council (ICC) imposed an eight-year ban on him for involvement in cricket corruption. Streak took full responsibility for his actions but denied any attempts to fix matches.
