Tukaram Mundhe, the Maharashtra FDA Commissioner, is currently taking strong action against businesses which are not following food safety rules. He is focusing on commerce warehouses and food delivery businesses.
On August 13, the Maharashtra FDA inspected 86 establishments linked to Blinkit, Zepto and Swiggy Instamart. The teams found problems like poor cleanliness, pest issues, wrong storage conditions and expired food products. The FDA issued 60 improvement notices and suspended licences of several units.
This was not his first action. The FDA has also taken action against restaurants and food outlets after finding poor hygiene and other food safety problems. Mundhe has made it clear that businesses will have to follow food safety rules if they want to continue operating.
But what makes this story important for healthcare is that Mundhe is not only looking at food outlets. His department is also checking medicines, health products and advertisements that can mislead people.
In May, the Maharashtra FDA seized around ₹73 lakh worth of medicines from 12 establishments across seven districts for misleading claims and wrong labelling.
Mundhe has also said that the FDA will focus more on fake medicines, misleading health advertisements, illegal online pharmacies and poor-quality healthcare products.
The Pharmaceutical Sector Is Also in Crosshairs
Mundhe’s campaign is also important for the healthcare sector because the FDA is not only checking food businesses. The department is also focusing on fake medicines, misleading advertisements, illegal online pharmacies and poor-quality healthcare products.
This means pharmaceutical companies, pharmacies, online medicine sellers and healthcare marketers may now face more checks on the products they sell and the claims they make.
This is important because a false or exaggerated medicine claim can mislead people. Some patients may buy the wrong product or delay proper medical treatment because they trust such claims.
Overall, the message is simple: healthcare businesses will need to be more careful about product quality, medicine claims, labelling and how they promote their products.
From a healthcare research perspective, this is also something worth watching. At Towards Healthcare Research & Consulting, we see regulatory changes like these as an important factor for pharmaceutical, healthcare and life sciences companies, as stronger checks can affect product quality, market access, online sales and consumer trust.
