Russia accuses Ukraine of Moscow drone attack

Date:

Russia has recently accused Ukraine of being responsible for a drone attack that caused damage to several buildings in Moscow’s capital early on Monday morning. According to the Russian defense ministry, two drones were successfully “suppressed and crashed,” resulting in no casualties.

Notably, the state-owned Tass news agency reported that one of the drones fell in close proximity to the defense ministry. Ukrainian officials have yet to comment on the incident, and it is a rarity for them to claim responsibility for attacks within Russian territory.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin revealed that the drone strikes targeted “non-residential” structures at approximately 04:00 local time (01:00 GMT). However, the buildings reportedly did not suffer any significant damage. Nonetheless, state news agencies noted that drone fragments were discovered approximately 2km (1.2 miles) away from the defense ministry’s buildings.

In response to the incident, the Russian defense ministry released a statement on Telegram, asserting that the act was an attempted “terrorist act” by the Kyiv regime using two drones within the city of Moscow.

Additionally, drone debris was found along Komsomolsky Avenue in Moscow, leading to traffic disruptions, as revealed by Moscow’s transport department on Telegram. Photos showcased emergency services attending to the scene.

Another high-rise office building on Likhachev Avenue was damaged during the attack. Footage aired on the military Zvezda TV channel displayed missing windows at the top of the building.

Russia has previously accused Ukraine of several drone attacks on its territory in recent months. For example, earlier this month, Russia claimed that Ukraine launched a drone attack on Moscow, resulting in flights being diverted from Vnukovo International Airport. However, Ukraine did not acknowledge responsibility for the incident. Similarly, in May, Kyiv denied any involvement in a drone attack on the Kremlin, which Russia interpreted as an assassination attempt on President Vladimir Putin’s life.

This latest drone attack comes one day after Russia targeted the Ukrainian port city of Odesa with missile strikes, leading to the destruction of the historical Transfiguration Cathedral. Unesco, the UN’s cultural agency, expressed deep dismay and condemned the attack on Odesa’s historic center.

In response to the escalating tensions, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky vowed retaliation for the missile strike on Odesa. During his address from Kyiv, he stated, “They will definitely feel this,” emphasizing that the impact of these attacks goes beyond cities, villages, or individuals, as they directly target humanity and the very foundations of European culture.
