San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H lived up to its legendary reputation as Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige took the stage to deliver one of the biggest casting reveals in Cinematic Universe history: Ryan Gosling is officially joining the MCU as Johnny Blaze, the Ghost Rider.
The standalone feature film, titled Ghost Rider, is slated for a 2028 theatrical release and will be directed by blockbuster filmmaker Shawn Levy.
The SDCC Hall H Reveal: “Bro, Let’s Ride”
The announcement unfolded in dramatic fashion. Attendance in Hall H erupted after the rumble of a revving motorcycle engine echoed through the room, signaling the entrance of the Spirit of Vengeance. Kevin Feige addressed long-standing rumors about the character before introducing Gosling to a roaring crowd.
“As you know, this is a character I’ve wanted to play for a very long time,” Gosling told the audience on stage, as reported by Marvel’s Official Announcement.
Gosling then welcomed director Shawn Levy onto the stage. The duo recently completed filming for Star Wars: Starfighter (releasing May 28, 2027). Levy shared that the idea for the project took shape while working together on set.
“We spent a lot of time last year making Starfighter, and as Ryan started talking about his vision for this character, we started riffing,” Levy said, detailing the encounter as covered by India Today. “I finally said, ‘Bro, let’s ride.’ We’ll see you in 2028!”

The Vision: Shawn Levy Returns to the MCU
Fresh off directing 2024’s massive MCU hit Deadpool & Wolverine, Shawn Levy returns to Marvel to tackle the supernatural and antihero side of the franchise.
Levy and Gosling have established a strong working dynamic. Fans of Gosling’s previous work know this role plays directly into his strengths—particularly his turn as a stunt motorcyclist in the critically acclaimed drama The Place Beyond the Pines (2012).
Comic Lore & Character Origins: Who is Johnny Blaze?
In Marvel Comics, Johnny Blaze is a stunt rider who strikes a pact with the demon Mephisto to save his father from terminal cancer. The tragic trade binds Blaze to an ancient demon known as the Spirit of Vengeance.
When evil is near, Blaze transforms into a hellfire-clad skeletal biker. His signature abilities include:
- Hellfire Manipulation & Chains: Wielding infernal weapons and a mystical motorcycle.
- The Penance Stare: Forcing wrongdoers to experience all the emotional and physical pain they have inflicted on others.
According to Gizmodo’s Event Coverage, Gosling’s casting marks the actor’s official debut in a major comic book superhero franchise.
Onscreen History: Passing the Hellfire Torch
Gosling is the second actor to play Johnny Blaze on the big screen:
- Nicolas Cage (2007 & 2011): Cage famously portrayed Blaze in Sony’s Ghost Rider and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.
- Gabriel Luna (2016): Following the rights returning to Marvel, Gabriel Luna played the Robbie Reyes incarnation of Ghost Rider in ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
As noted in reporting by the Hindustan Times, bringing Ghost Rider under the main Marvel Studios umbrella opens up crossovers with supernatural teams like the Midnight Sons.
