Why Netflix Decided to Cancel the League of Legends Series Arcane

Date:

With a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 100% from critics and 87% from viewers, “Arcane” is widely regarded as one of the best animated series ever. However, it ended after just two seasons. Many questioned why the popular show would end, and there was a lot of conjecture over the expenses, particularly since the initial plan called for a five-season plot.

Intriguingly, Riot Games co-founder Marc Merrill publicly said that the show’s third season was canceled so the crew could “explore other universes” without abandoning entertainment as a whole. Later, Merrill stated in a Reddit post that “there was a budget conversation” about allowing up to five seasons, but “Arcane” was always intended to have two. According to Merrill, “setting aside a bunch of money for lots of development” is “irrelevant” to “Arcane’s” seasons.

Nevertheless, “Arcane” was very expensive. According to sources, Riot Games, the company that created the game based on “League of Legends,” used $60 million of its own funds to advertise the inaugural season. Variety also revealed that the production and promotion of the show’s 18-episode, two-season run cost the studio $250 million. It is therefore among the most costly animated series ever created. In his reply, Merrill notes that the cost per minute of “Arcane” is between one-third and one-fourth that of Disney’s Pixar movies and Illumination. It’s crucial to remember that “Arcane” was extremely costly. Furthermore, some of the parties—like Netflix—might never publicly discuss the details of the show’s ostensibly abrupt termination.

Was Arcane really cancelled?

We might never know the whole truth behind “Arcane”‘s conclusion. We merely need to choose which story to believe for the time being. There is theoretically an answer, regardless of whether you believe Marc Merrill’s statement that the program was always planned to have only two seasons or the media reports that the expenditures were only continuing to rise beyond two seasons.

Ultimately, the topic is only truly pertinent because of how excellent the show is. We rank “Arcane” among the best ten epic fantasy shows to watch on any streaming service for a reason. The good news is that it appears that “Arcane” won’t be the only animated story to take place in the “League of Legends” universe, at least until something else is revealed.

There are reportedly three additional episodes planned, each of which will concentrate on a distinct area of the game’s globe, either Noxus, Ionia, or Demacia. If you’d like a type of epilogue, you can watch the cinematic trailer for the 2025 “League of Legends” season, which was created by the “Arcane” animation company Fortiche.
