Elon Musk’s X Now Allows Users to Make Audio and Video Calls for Free

Date:

The renowned social media platform, formerly known as Twitter and now rebranded as X under the leadership of Elon Musk, has introduced a groundbreaking feature. Users can now engage in video and phone calls directly on the platform, completely free of charge. What sets this feature apart is that users no longer need to disclose their phone numbers or subscribe to X Premium to access it. Previously exclusive to X Premium subscribers, this feature is now available to all users, marking a significant expansion in accessibility and functionality.

Enrique Barragan, an engineer at the social media platform X, recently shared exciting news with users via a post on the platform. In his message, Barragan announced the gradual rollout of audio and video calling features to non-premium users, inviting them to test out the new functionality. Now, users have the option to allow calls from everyone, expanding their communication possibilities within the platform.

However, there are some limitations to this feature. Users can only receive calls from accounts they follow or have in their address book. Additionally, both accounts must have previously interacted via direct message (DM) at least once to establish a connection via call. Nevertheless, users have the flexibility to adjust their settings and choose who they receive calls from, whether it’s limited to those they follow or open to anyone on the platform.

Previously, X had introduced this feature exclusively to iOS users with X Premium subscriptions. However, recognizing the demand for expanded accessibility, the company decided to extend the calling feature to its Android application earlier this year. Despite this, access remained restricted to Premium subscribers until now.

Curious about how to make calls on X? Here’s a simple guide:

  1. Launch the X app on your Android or iOS device and navigate to the direct message (DM) section.
  2. Tap on the phone icon and select either ‘Audio Call’ or ‘Video Call’ to initiate a conversation. The recipient will receive a notification indicating your call attempt.
  3. To adjust call settings, including who can call you, access the Settings menu located in the top right corner of the app interface.

With these new calling features, X continues to evolve its platform, providing users with enhanced communication tools and fostering greater connectivity among its diverse community.
