How to Manage Car Accident Injuries

Date:

In the US alone, an estimated number of 38,000 people die each year due to road accidents. So car accidents are definitely a serious threat to everyone’s safety. If you are a driver who practices strict safety measures, then you are contributing in keeping the roads safe. This does not only apply to the motorists but to the pedestrians as well.

However, no matter how safely you drive, you might still get caught in a car accident. Although you may not be at fault, it is still possible because other motorists may not have been as careful as you. So when you are driving, always be alert and assume that the other motorists may be careless.

So, what would you actually do when you get in a car accident and how will you manage car accident injuries?

Here are a few steps to take after a car accident and manage your accident injuries

Do not run from the site of an accident.

Whether it’s your fault or not, you should never immediately leave the site of an accident you were involved in. You should either wait for the police to arrive or meet with the involved motorist and exchange information.

Check yourself and the other people involved and see if they have injuries.

It is important to evaluate and feel yourself to see if you have injured yourself in the accident. If you can stand up and look around try to see if your passengers, or any other motorist or pedestrian was injured in the accident.

If there are injuries, then you should call an ambulance so you and the other people can be given medical attention.

Here is a list of the common injuries motorists often incur during accidents:

Bruises, scrapes, and scratches – You often get bruises, scrapes and scratches after a car accident due to broken pieces of glass, plastic and whatnot that flies right to you after the impact.

Hitting the dashboard or banging into the interior of your car in low impact can also result in bruises, scrapes and scratches.

Deep cuts and scratches may need to be stitched and bandaged but you would not necessarily need to be admitted to the hospital. You might need to take medications for pain. It would take a week or two for these injuries to heal completely depending on the severity.

Broken Ribs – When you are driving the car at moderate to high speed and suddenly stop, there is a possibility that your body will launch itself forward after the stop. When your body, specifically the torso, hits a part of the car at a moderate to high impact, then your ribs might crack at the impact.

If you feel a serious pain in the chest area and difficulty in breathing, you must immediately go to see a doctor to make sure that your ribs are not cracked. It may take some time to heal and you would also need to make sure that no other internal organs were damaged.

Head Injuries – Head injuries are also common during car accidents as the heads are prone to hitting objects in the car. It may even get injured when the airbag deploys and hits your head too hard.

If you feel nauseated and start vomiting, you should get yourself checked by a doctor to rule out a head injury. You might need to get admitted in the hospital for further tests and for observation as well. The more serious the head injury, the more time it takes for it to heal.

Call a lawyer.

If you get injured in a car accident, it is expected that you will have to foot the bill for your hospitalisation and potentially lose your source of income while admitted to the hospital. If your injuries leave you permanently disabled, you may lose the ability to work forever and permanently lose a source of income.

Don’t wait too long before calling a lawyer, too. You have to call as soon as possible so that he can make a better case with more than enough evidence to ensure your win in the court.

Conclusion

Car accident injuries can be moderate and sometimes they  can be very serious. The severity of injuries may depend on the circumstances of the accident.
