In the latest Nipah virus outbreak in Kerala, the state’s health minister has confirmed that 175 individuals are on the contact list and are being monitored closely. Health authorities have ramped up efforts to trace and isolate individuals potentially exposed to the virus. Kerala’s health department is taking all necessary measures, including setting up containment zones and ramping up testing facilities to prevent further spread of the virus. Citizens have been urged to remain vigilant and follow health protocols.
Following a recent Nipah virus death, Kerala Health Minister Veena George said 175 people in Malappuram district have been identified as contacts. Among these, 74 are healthcare workers.
Out of the 175 contacts, 126 are considered primary contacts, with 104 at high risk, and 49 are secondary contacts. Currently, 10 people are being treated at Manjeri Medical College Hospital, and 13 are awaiting test results.
The recent outbreak began after a 24-year-old man died from the Nipah virus on September 9. Kerala has had previous Nipah virus outbreaks since 2018, and the recent death on July 21, 2024, was the first this year.
Nipah virus antibodies have been found in bats across several districts. The virus can spread from bats to humans and then from person to person.
To prevent further spread, five wards in Malappuram are now containment zones. Shops will close by 7 pm, and places like schools and cinemas will remain closed. People are advised not to gather in large groups and to wear masks. Restrictions are also in place for weddings, funerals, and other events in Malappuram.
