During a recent phone conversation between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his UK counterpart, Rishi Sunak, the two leaders discussed several bilateral issues, with a particular focus on trade and economic matters. PM Modi also sought an update on the repatriation of economic offenders, indicating the importance of returning these individuals to India to face justice.
The Indian Prime Minister also raised the issue of security for Indian diplomatic establishments in the UK, calling for strong action against anti-India elements. In response, Rishi Sunak condemned the recent attack on the Indian High Commission and assured Modi that the UK would take measures to ensure the safety of Indian personnel and missions.
The issue of economic offenders who have sought refuge in the UK was also raised, with Modi seeking progress on the return of these fugitives so that they can be tried in the Indian judicial system. Notably, India has been pressing the UK to extradite Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi to face trial for their alleged involvement in financial fraud cases.
Finally, PM Modi extended an invitation to Sunak to attend the G20 Summit to be held in September 2023, which was accepted by the UK PM. Sunak also reiterated the UK’s full support for India’s initiatives.
