On Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared that when Donald Trump becomes president of the United States, Russia’s war in Ukraine will end “faster.”
In a radio interview with Ukrainian state broadcaster Suspilne, Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged that the battlefield was challenging and that Russia had been leveraging its superiority in both troops and weaponry.
In reference to the upcoming Trump administration, he claimed that the war “will end faster with the policy of this team that will now lead the White House.”
“This is their approach, their promise to their society, and it is also very important to them,” he added.
“We must do everything to ensure that the war ends next year through diplomatic means,” Zelensky said for Ukraine.
Trump, who was elected to a second term earlier this month, has stated time and time again that if he had been president, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine would not have begun. He said in July that he could end the conflict in a single day, although he did not specify how.
The president-elect and his running mate, JD Vance, expressed serious concerns about the US’s continued commitment to Kyiv throughout his campaign. Since the massive invasion of Russian soldiers in February 2022, the conflict has lasted for more than two and a half years.
Russia is advancing toward strategic locations along the eastern and southeast Ukrainian frontlines, including the city of Kurakhove. Ukraine would not confirm Russia’s allegation that it had taken two additional eastern settlements in the Donetsk region on Saturday.
In the meantime, Moscow is getting ready to launch a counteroffensive in Kursk, which is located in southern Russia and is the scene of Kyiv’s only significant military victory this year.
Zelensky acknowledged that things were “indeed difficult” in the eastern part of Ukraine.
They had been waiting for the delivery of some weaponry for a year, he added, and “there is a slow but steady pressure and advance of the Russians.”
However, the Ukrainian leader pointed out that Moscow’s forces were losing up to 2,000 men per day as a result of Russia’s advances.
“These are terrible losses,” he remarked. “With such losses, they cannot continue to advance.”
Zelensky criticized German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for opening a “Pandora’s box” that only serves to thwart attempts to isolate Russia’s leader during a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday.
For the first time in two years, Scholz and Putin had a discussion on Friday.
